Ja Rule Gets 28-Month Sentence for Tax Evasion

After not paying income taxes on more than $3 million dollars in earnings, Ja Rule was sentenced to 28 months in federal prison earlier today (July 18).

The ?Superstar? rapper (real name Jeffrey Atkins) admitted to not ponying up to Uncle Sam on his earnings between 2004 and 2006, which led to the time behind bars and a required payment of $1.1 million in back taxes and fees.

Just before being sentenced, Ja Rule spoke to the court, saying, ?I in no way attempted to deceive the government or do anything illegal.?

?I was a young man who made a lot of money ? I?m getting a little choked up ? I didn?t know how to deal with these finances, and I didn?t have people to guide me, so I made mistakes.?
