Waterton's new bike trail a wild(life) experience

A great family trail is the new 6.9-km (one-way) Kootenai Brown trail, which leads from the town site to the park gates along the edge of the lakes. This new scenic trail opened in October 2010 as a legacy gift in recognition of the 125th anniversary of Canada's national parks.

You can’t drive very far along the road leading into Waterton Lakes National Park without encountering at least one sign warning you to watch for wildlife crossing the highway.

Though there are no such warning signs on the new bike path that parallels the highway route, you would be wise to keep your eyes peeled just the same. Three deer ran across the path directly in front of us as I cycled the trail on a recent visit with my oldest son.

The new Kootenai Brown bike trail in Waterton Lakes National Park winds its way along 6.9 kilometres of some of the most scenic landscapes in the Rockies. Opened in October 2010, the trail hugs the edge of the hillsides between the road and the beautiful lakes making the scenic ride between the town site and the park gates safe, easy, and fun for cyclists of all ages.

The trail is aptly named, because it passes by the gravesite of Kootenai Brown, the first warden of this unique national park and an interesting character in his own right.,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
