As the Y front turns 75, we tell you why you should embrace its natural successor.

Why should I wear them?
If you want to undress to impress, make like an elephant, and pack your trunk, boys. The sexier, more stylish son of the Y-front, it fits just under your bottom: Result: There are unsightly seams and your undressal mode spells sleek, supportive and sexy. Wear it for the same reason women wear a good push-up bra: your clothes at better on top. Underwear is the foundation of any good outfit-but it also gives you a massive shot of inner confidence, which makes you even more sexy.

How do I wear them?

Don't be afraid to add a dash of bright colour for an on-trend look. In fact, be as adventurous as you dare. A coloured waistband is a good option. When wearing jeans (but no other trousers) it's fine to have your underwear showing a little, so long as you don't have your buttocks hanging out for the world to see. Anything more than an inch showing is a crime, anything less, a waste. Women want to see a tantalising hint of what lies beneath, not the unedited director's cut.

What should I avoid?

Avoid white if you're on a budget, as they won't last as long. Underwear is often a non-exchangeable item, so just buy one pair before investing in bulk and make sure they fi t right. Too large a pair will result in unsightly bunching. Trunks, unlike boxer shorts, should be snug. Be ruthless in getting rid of old ones. Fresh, clean pants are a a sign of respect for yourself and the women who get to see them.

Where should I buy?
Boxer trunks have exploded in a variety of colours and fits of late, so you have plenty of options: Your usual starts with exploring the ranges that the Jockey and Chromosome have to offer. But for a bit more colour, head to Zara, Tommy Hilfiger or UCB. If you want your misters sheathed in luxury, Burberry, Hugo Boss and Armani are no-brainers.
