Isaac "Biz" Stone is moving on from Twitter, just five years after co-founding the microblogging site Twitter that has become integral to the social media scene around the world.

Stone, 37, said on his blog that he will work with the company for many years to come, but that the most effective use of his time now is to "get out of the way" of Twitter's crew.

British actors Daniel Craig and Rachel Weisz have married.

"They are married," said an LA spokesman for the 43-year-old actor, best known for playing superspy James Bond in the film franchise. He provided no more details.

People magazine said the couple, who were first cited as a couple last autumn, married in a quiet ceremony in New York on Wednesday.

Weisz, 41, won an Oscar for her role in "The Constant Gardener".

The newlyweds play husband and wife in the upcoming "Dream House", due out in the United States in September.

Chinese lantern blamed for Somerton fire

Firefighters were called to the Polham Lane site in Somerton after a tonne of paper and printer cartridges caught fire on Saturday night.

A spokesman from Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said the lantern had fallen on to the paper.Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service had issued a warning about the use of lanterns only the day before.

The paper decorations, which can float up to a mile into the air when they are lit, are often constructed with metal wire.They have become a popular feature at parties and weddings.

Following the Somerton fire, Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service station commander Jim Morrison said: "Without sounding like a killjoy, we would ask people to consider not buying and setting them off because of the dangers.

"Although they look pretty they will often fail and come down early whilst the fuel for the lantern itself is still burning."

Lawmakers voted late Friday to legalize same-sex marriage, making New York the largest state where gay and lesbian couples will be able to wed and giving the national gay-rights movement new momentum from the state where it was born.
The marriage bill, whose fate was uncertain until moments before the vote, was approved 33 to 29 in a packed but hushed Senate chamber. Four members of the Republican majority joined all but one Democrat in the Senate in supporting the measure after an intense and emotional campaign aimed at the handful of lawmakers wrestling with a decision that divided their friends, their constituents and sometimes their own homes.


With his position still undeclared, Senator Mark J. Grisanti, a Republican from Buffalo who had sought office promising to oppose same-sex marriage, told his colleagues he had agonized for months before concluding he had been wrong.

“I apologize for those who feel offended,” Mr. Grisanti said, adding, “I cannot deny a person, a human being, a taxpayer, a worker, the people of my district and across this state, the State of New York, and those people who make this the great state that it is the same rights that I have with my wife.”

Senate approval was the final hurdle for the same-sex marriage legislation, which was approved last week by the Assembly. Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo signed the measure at 11:55 p.m., and the law will go into effect in 30 days, meaning that same-sex couples could begin marrying in New York by late July.

Passage of same-sex marriage here followed a daunting run of defeats in other states where voters barred same-sex marriage by legislative action, constitutional amendment or referendum. Just five states currently permit same-sex marriage: Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont, as well as the District of Columbia.

A tsunami warning is now in effect which includes the coastal areas of Alaska from Unimak Pass, Alaska (80 miles northeast of Dutch Harbor) to Amchitka Pass, Alaska (125 miles west of Adak)," the West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center said.


"Those feeling the earth shake, seeing unusual wave action or the water level rising or receding may have only a few minutes before the tsunami arrival and should move immediately," warned the WCATWC.

"Homes and small buildings are not designed to withstand tsunami impacts. Do not stay in these structures."

The quake struck more than 1,000 miles west of the major Alaskan city of Anchorage.

Brazil Vale’s $1.1 Billion Target Metorex Gets Unsolicited Interest

Metorex Ltd., the target of a $1.1 billion takeover bid from Brazil’s Vale SA, received an unsolicited approach from another party.

“There is currently no certainty that Metorex will receive a firm intention to make an offer from the alternate party,” Johannesburg-based Metorex said today in a statement.

Vale, seeking to boost copper output almost fivefold to 1 million metric tons by 2015, bid 7.35 rand ($1.08) a share for Metorex on April 8 in a transaction giving the Rio de Janeiro- based company the Democratic Republic of Congo’s Ruashi open-pit mine and the Chibuluma copper development in Zambia.

Metorex rose 4.9 percent to 7.66 rand, the highest closing level since Oct. 17, 2008, as of 5 p.m. Johannesburg trading.

“You can see from the price that the people in the know, and there are always people in the know, are obviously impressed by the quality of the bidder,” Vestact Securities Ltd. Managing Director Paul Theron said by phone from Johannesburg today. “Vale are not idiots. You can assume that they recognize a good value case,” he said, adding the company’s offer would send a signal to others highlighting the value of the investment.

Legal Battle

The bidder may be Chinese, Johannesburg-based news website Miningmx reported today.

Other companies operating in Congo include First Quantum Minerals Ltd. and Eurasian Natural Resources Corp.

First Quantum, the Canadian company in a legal battle with Congo over its Kolwezi mining license and assets, isn’t involved in the offer for Metorex, company President Clive Newall said in an e-mailed response to queries. “Definitely not us.”

Charlotte Kirkham, a spokeswoman at ENRC, wouldn’t comment. The London-based company, whose copper units include Central African Mining & Exploration Co. in Congo and Chambishi Metals Plc in Zambia, bought rights to the Kolwezi project in August. The deal prompted First Quantum to seek more than $1 billion in compensation.

A Vale official in Rio de Janeiro, who declined to be identified citing corporate policy, said the company wouldn’t comment.

Stalking a New Frontier: The Arctic

In 2007, Russia sent two mini-subs to the seabed two and a half miles under the North Pole to plant its flag — a move that, however symbolic, points to new rivalries over its potential riches. Canada, Denmark, Norway and the United States also have territory in the Arctic Circle, and international conventions entitle them to economic zones within 200 miles of their borders. But Russia claims — without international support so far — that the seabed is an extension of its continental shelf, and Denmark has begun looking at the shelf off its territory in Greenland.



Russia has already used its oil and gas exports as instruments of state power in dealing with other former Soviet republics. Now, how the seabed would be divided, managed or protected promises to be a subject of dispute with other Arctic nations, presumably to be settled by new treaties or conventions.

Brazil creating anti-pirate force after spate of attacks on Amazon riverboats

Authorities in the Brazilian Amazon are to create an anti-piracy taskforce following a spate of attacks on riverboats in the northern state of Pará.

The rapid-response unit was unveiled by officials after an attack in which 11 heavily armed thieves stormed a passenger boat heading for the state capital, Belém.



Joao Bosco Rodrigues, head of Pará's specialist police divisions, said the unit was "another instrument to combat and prevent" the actions of pirates in the Amazon region. "This group will be there to react to any kind of demand on our rivers," he said.

Witnesses to the latest attack said that thieves in small motorboats approached the passenger vessel, firing into the air, on Tuesday afternoon.

Once aboard, the men reportedly threatened to execute some of the estimated 140 adult and child passengers.

"They humiliated everybody," passenger Artur Cesar told the local Diário do Pará newspaper. "They put guns to the children's heads and even said they would cut the fingers off those who didn't hand over their rings. There were pistols, revolvers – lots of weapons."

Benivaldo Carvalho said he had been hit on the head by the pirates. "It was two hours of terror, humiliation and powerlessness. They pointed their guns at us and said they were going to kill us."

Another passenger, Maria das Gracas Monteiro, said: "They treated us worse than dogs. I thought I wouldn't make it back alive."

The issue of piracy in the Brazilian Amazon made international headlines in 2001, following the murder of Sir Peter Blake, a world famous sailor and environmentalist who was shot by a gang known as "the water rats" while on a research expedition to the region.

Local boatmen say attacks are now common in Pará, a sprawling, sparsely-policed region.

In March this year a sailor in his 20s was killed when two boatloads of pirates raided his vessel as it transported acai fruit to Belém.

Last month two more sailors were shot by pirates in the neighbouring state of Amazonas. Police blamed a group known as the "Black river pirates".

Paulo Cesar Pantoja, the owner of the boat attacked on Tuesday, said numerous attacks had taken place in recent months.

Lady Gaga has been eyeing India and Bollywood for some time, says Acharia-Bath, and she's expressed an interest in singing Born This Way in Hindi.

Saudi Arabia women drive cars in protest

Women in Saudi Arabia have been openly driving cars in defiance of an official ban on female drivers in the ultra-conservative kingdom.

The direct action has been organised on social network sites, where women have been posting images and videos of themselves behind the wheel.

The Women2Drive Facebook page said the direct action would continue until a royal decree reversed the ban.

Last month, a woman was arrested after uploading a video of herself driving.



Manal al-Sherif was accused of "besmirching the kingdom's reputation abroad and stirring up public opinion", but was released after 10 days having promised not to drive again.

Campaigners have not called for a mass protest - which would be illegal - but have asked women who have foreign driving licences to drive themselves as they go about their daily life.

"All that we need is to run our errands without depending on drivers," said one woman in the first film posted in the early hours of Friday morning.
