- Elie Saab's new perfume
Francis Kurkdijan, the nose behind Elie Saab's new perfume, takes us inside the scent.
What's the spirit of the scent?
It has to be a sum of what Elie Saab is about: the exceptional craft behind haute couture, the exception of the raw materials, the purity of the line, as well as the sense of the details — and all the details you don't see, which is also very close to perfume.
Why do you think your initial idea was chosen from 46 others?
I had the chance to understand the project in a different eye, I've been to Lebanon many times. I understand the culture, it's a double culture, everyone speaks two languages. It's not only the orange flower and the café blanc, which I enjoy but are really superficial. You have to think of Lebanon as a very deep, avant garde country, even though it is very tiny. If you have that in mind, you understand how Elie Saab works.
What are the main notes in the fragrance?
There are notes that stand out, but I see the perfume as a blend — of course you have orange flower, patchouli, cedar wood — but you can't cut it in pieces. In perfume you want to give a quality where you don't exactly know what's inside, otherwise you smell like a flower. I don't see a women walking down the street wearing roses around her neck like she was out of the florist. I like that blend that gives an abstraction to the perfume.,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
